A Two Way Link Between Japan and the World
The Japan Times has long enjoyed a reputation for its comprehensive coverage of domestic and foreign news from a global perspective. Its editorial goal is to give its multinational readers a broad and balanced view of the world and of Japan's place in it.
Over 100 years of Reporting the News
What is currently the English-language newspaper with the largest circulation in Japan began on March 22, 1897. The Japan Times was inaugurated in Kojimachi Ward (now Chiyoda Ward), Tokyo. Sueji Yamada, businessman, was installed as President through the efforts of Yukichi Fukuzawa, philosopher and founder of Keio University. Motosada Zumoto, Yamada's protege, then reputed to be the best English writer in Japan, was appointed managing editor. The Japan Times was the nation's first English language newspaper edited and managed by Japanese. In 1865, towards the end of the Tokugawa era, a British national began an English language newspaper in Yokohama, also called the Japan Times. The Japan Mail (inugurated in 1870) absorbed this newspaper, and was in turn incorporated into The Japan Times in 1918. From this, it can be said that the history of The Japan Times actually dates back over 130 years into the Tokugawa era.

The later years also saw The Japan Times absorb The Japan Chronicle (founded in 1868 by an British national), and The Japan Advertiser (founded in 1890 by an American), merging all the English-language papers into one prior to the Second World War. In 1957 The Japan Times inaugurated a Daily International Airmail Edition marking the occasion of the 60th anniversary of its founding. The new edition was honored with the Nihon Shimbun Kyokai (Japan Newspaper Publishers and Editors Association) award. No longer a promising developing nation in Asia when the Japan Times was inaugurated, Japan today has become a world power mostly based on the strength of its economic achievements. In the course of over 100 years, The Japan Times has built up an unchallenged status as the representative English language newspaper in Japan.
