Straight to the heart of the land of Mozart

Providing a direct route to the heart of the Alps, Salzburg's airport is an air gateway to a rapidly growing economic region with a long and rich cultural tradition.

Salzburg is a city that evokes a rich culture, with its favorite son Mozart held up as the pinnacle of a tradition of sophisticated music and art. Along with the world-famous cultural events which take place in the city throughout the year, Salzburg also enjoys a leading economic position within Austria as a high-tech region located in an economic center that also encompasses Baden-Württemburg, Bavaria and Northern Italy.

Situated in the middle of this dynamic region is Salzburg's W A Mozart Airport, which is helping to further enhance commercial and social activity by providing reliable, high quality logistical services. Serving 4 million people and 1.3 million passengers a year, Salzburg Airport is Austria's largest regional airport. It proudly calls itself the "Gateway to the Alps", specializing in seasonal traffic. Having just celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2001, Europe's second most important airport for ski charter flights is continuing to attract more investment into the region.

Günther Auer, managing director of Salzburg Airport

Günther Auer, the airport's managing director explains: "Beyond the simple statistics that record the growth of traffic, the airport also directly contributes to economic expansion by providing employment, as well as supporting a large number of indirect jobs in the area. Salzburg airport also participates vigorously in the development of air transport and the associated travel and logistics industries in the region, which are among the fastest growing businesses in the world."

New twice-daily flights by the hugely successful low cost airline Ryanair from Stansted airport outside London to Salzburg airport have already added more than100,000 new passengers in its first year of operation, and the airport is preparing for further expected growth in the coming years.

"Our winter ski charter business is developing very well with new markets like Russia, the Ukraine and Poland," Auer concludes. "We see more flights coming from Scandinavia and a doubling of flights from Ireland. With this healthy growth, together with the continuous success of our Ryanair flights, we expect to take Salzburg Airport beyond the 1.3 million-passenger mark. This is our goal for 2002."
