Championing Copenhagen

O. Rolf Larssen assists companies in setting up their operations in Copenhagen.

The recent decision by Biogen, the world's oldest independent biopharmaceutical company, to build a $350 million plant in the greater Copenhagen region is just the most recent fruit of Copenhagen Capacity's efforts to promote Denmark's capital city.

"If you are interested in putting yourself in one location in the Nordic region and you want to be in the most central place, with the largest airport, and the best infrastructure, there's no doubt that Copenhagen would be the best place for you," says Copenhagen Capacity's managing director, O. Rolf Larssen, as he summarizes the main reasons for the decision.

Once a company has chosen to locate itself in Copenhagen, its reasons for remaining will be the smoothness of daily contact with the local Danes. Larssen explains that this is the deciding factor - and the one that best wins visitors over.

All this can be summed up in two words- flexibility and ease. Larssen comments: "We Danes can be very flexible. We can adjust our manner to Americans, to Germans, and to Japanese. We don't try to impose our system and ways of doing things." This flexibility is best illustrated by the fact that 80 percent of Danes speak English fluently. It is because of this ability and willingness to adapt to others that companies will find establishing themselves in the city quite easy.

Copenhagen Capacity's goal is to promote the establishment of new companies and the subsequent creation of more jobs. Arthur Andersen's recent report on the company says it has succeeded in creating 2,600 jobs. Furthermore, in the context of Biogen's plant in Copenhagen, Larssen remarks: "We feel that this case has really been a push for international commerce to look into Denmark."

In Japan, the company has been attending conferences and working with the Danish embassy, using it as a gateway to establish contact with Japanese companies. One example of Copenhagen Capacity's Japanese success is its involvement with Chugai Pharma, a Japanese company carrying out a clinical trial project in Denmark. Larssen coordinated both with the mother company in Japan and the European head office in London to finalize a move to Denmark.

This was a welcome effort for Larssen, and he continues in a upbeat tone: "We are optimistic about the future. We will go on visiting Japanese cities like Tokyo and Osaka, and we're definitely sure this will result in productive investments in Denmark."

Copenhagen is ideally located for the European market.

With Biogen as the latest feather in its cap, Copenhagen Capacity has the enviable job of championing a wonderful location like its city.
