More powerful then ever

As the largest investor in power plants in the Nordic countries, Pohjolan Voima leads the pack in a region obsessed with energy use and production. Most active in Finland, the company produces and supplies energy solutions and services for its shareholders, keeping up with Finland's modernization and innovation.

"With our diversified generating capacity, we are able to concentrate our efforts on numerous industrial power projects, allowing added flexibility for our shareholders," commented Timo Rajala, the company's president and CEO.

Pohjolan Voima's technology programs include the use of recycled fuels by gasification. Its Estlink project will be an opportunity to build a pipeline from Norway to Finland and a link between Finland and Estonia. The company is also involved in the construction of offshore windpower systems and the development of windpower plant technology.

Pohjolan Voima is responding to both climatic and social demands; there is increasing demand for technologies that respect the environment. "We have to be responsible for the increase in electricity use," said Rajala. To elaborate, the company is focusing on the use of domestic bio-fuels, developing renewable energy sources, utilizing recycled fuels and building additional safe nuclear power.

"Nuclear power will be increasingly vital in the future, and will continue to meet the steady demand for electricity," remarked Kauko Relander, senior vice president of the company. With the continuing global debate on the greenhouse effect and the repercussions felt by the world's decision makers, Pohjolan Voima is focusing on economic, environmental and social responsibility.
