Setting global standards

Known for its technology, innovation, versatility and active business life, Tampere city is the second largest regional center in Finland - 28 percent of its workforce of 28% involved in industry and 68 percent working in the service sector. Tampere University is practically synonymous with the city, a nucleus of research and development for the entire country.

"The Tampere University of Technology has been developed as an international center of expertise in the fields of mechanical engineering and automation, information and communications technology, media services and health care technology," pointed out its rector, Jarl-Thure Eriksson. In the early 1980s and 1990s, the focus was on developing the computer science department. Today TUT boasts a cutting-edge information technology laboratory -- the Digital Media Institute, which focuses particularly on the field of digital signal processing.

Rector Jarl-Thure Eriksson takes much pride in the track record of Tampere University of Technology

"In terms of compound semiconductor technology in Europe, our Optoelectronics Research Centre is one of the biggest and most important," explained Rector Erikkson. "Our biomaterials research group was the first in the world to develop biodegradable implants for surgical use -- such as meniscus arrows and bio-replaceable finger and toe joint prostheses."

Due to its close cooperation with the corporate world, TUT is one of the largest sources for fresh employees in Tampere. More then half of its graduates find employment in the information industry after graduation. TUT also attracts thousands of students and researchers every year, participating in a number of student exchange programs. Worldwide, it cooperates with over 160 universities.

"This internationalization undoubtedly brings competitiveness into our university and community," explained Rector Erikkson. "Finnish people are quite international, adding the influences of Sweden and Russia to become world citizens."
