Sisu Diesel takes the show off-road

In a city called Nokia in Finland, you would expect signs of the wireless industry. On the contrary, the city's main industry is the manufacture of Sisu Diesel engines. The engines have acquired a reputation for high quality performance in their specially designed off-road applications, and are now used in a wide range of vehicles -- from tractors and forklifts to forest machinery.

"Ninety percent of our sales come from the agricultural sector, where we are world leaders," commented Eero Tomi, president of the company, with 20 years of experience in engineering. "With our 50-year history of excellence, we are now a member of the Partek Corporation. Sisu Diesel has thus been able to concentrate on personalized service and the exploration of new markets."

President Eero Tomi relies on R&D to power Sisu Diesel into new markets around the world.

In an innovative country like Finland, where product development is an everyday challenge for manufacturers, Tomi is also focusing his company's efforts on research and development. "R&D plays a crucial role in allowing us to meet growing demand in both our engine manufacturing capacity and after-sales service," he said.

Roughly 80 percent of the company's products are exported. Sisu Diesel's business has expanded to include Brazil, India and Russia, and is now keen to find openings in the Chinese market.

Steady growth is also expected with the equally challenging goal of protecting the environment. The company's engines currently have the most advanced turbo charging and fuel injection systems, resulting in minimal smoke, low fuel consumption and low emissions levels.

Tomi emphasized, "Our policy is to concentrate on the areas we are good at, and to constantly strive for innovation and improvement that will help our clients become more competitive."
