Taking care of the Indian connection

A significant amount of trade between Japan and the rest of the world goes through Japanese trading houses, among them giants like Mitsubishi Corporation. The company's Indian arm, based in New Delhi, has traditionally focused its main business activities on the chemicals, machinery and metals sectors. Today, it is especially targeting the opportunities that have arisen in connection with the rehabilitation and regeneration of power plants. But connecting more directly to Indian clients is also high on its priority list.

"In anticipation of the future growth and expansion of power generation projects and chemical and steel plants, we continue to develop our relationships and work closely with clients to gather the timely, accurate information which is vital to success," says Yuji Hara, chief representative of Mitsubishi Corporation in India.

A related focus is on adapting technology to local needs. "One of our strengths is our experience in logistics and distribution," he adds. "Tied in with this are our services in credit control, finance and transport. When looking to develop new business opportunities, we realized we needed to utilize these assets. This led us to a joint venture with a local company to develop new modes of refrigerated storage for food products in India."

The hazards of Indian weather and poor infrastructure mean that many foods do not last the journey from A to B. Through this joint venture -- Snowman Frozen Foods -- Mitsubishi has developed a state of the art chain of cold store warehousing and distribution facilities to reach the needs of consumers all over India.

The company has maintained its position as a forerunner in the industry by consistently meeting ever-changing customer needs, and Hara believes the company is suitably positioned to provide the best solutions for the increasingly diverse needs of its customers.

Hara foresees growth for India in the future. "Our goal is to satisfy our 21st century market, and help it develop with the times."
