Business and the environment: key partners

Indonesia has long profited from its abundance of natural resources. Companies with an assured awareness of environmental concerns are now reaping the rewards of investing in this mineral rich country. With high demand for copper and other by products throughout ASEAN countries, Indonesia has benefited not only from its resources but also from the investment of companies such as Smelting.

Formed in 1995 with 60.5 percent of the company owned by Mitsubishi Materials, Smelting has established itself as a key player in Indonesia's copper industry. The company's facility in Gresik, Java was the first copper smelting plant to be built in Indonesia and is still recognized as one of Asia's finest.

The plant converts and refines copper concentrate produced by Freeport Indonesia and manufactures pure copper metal (known as copper cathode) used for electric wire, copper tubing, plates and alloys.

Masahiro Nishida, Smelting's president director, explains: "We have quite an important position in Indonesia as we currently produce 200,000 tons of copper cathode per year. Although this is already a significant amount, we are looking to further increase our capacity by 20 percent in the future."

Masahiro Nishida, president director of Smelting

In addition to the company's impressive output, the technology employed at the plant is recognized worldwide as being environmentally safe and cost-effective. These two crucial factors have enabled Smelting to build on its solid position in the supply of copper cathode to the domestic and international markets.

"Our company is able to serve customers' immediate requirements as we have established a strong position as a supplier of copper cathode," stresses Nishida. "Thirty percent of our products are sold in the Indonesian market. Due to our respect for environmental concerns and the huge number of jobs we have created, I believe we have a secure and positive future in Indonesia."
