From East Java, wonder drugs to heal the world
The relentless progress of disease won't wait for a cure. In developing countries, there is a great urgency and a huge requirement for pharmaceutical drugs to combat illnesses. Tomorrow's problems require solutions today, and one pharmaceutical company in Indonesia has been meeting these challenges for almost 30 years.
Meiji Indonesia, head office in Tokyo, has been a pioneer supplier of quality Indonesian antibiotics since 1974. Its president director, Akihito Yoshioka, says: "At Meiji Indonesia, quality comes first. Among the Indonesian medical profession, Meiji is acknowledged as one of the leaders in the production of antibiotics. Ninety percent of our products are injected antibiotics, though we also manufacture tablets, ointments, capsules and creams at our factory in East Java."
A recent investment of US$10 million at its factory now allows penicillin and none penicillin-based drugs to be handled in separate buildings. This prevents cross contamination during production and ensures Meiji Indonesia's levels of production remain of the highest quality. Additionally, in recognition of the company's capability to deliver the highest quality production standards, it has been certified by the Indonesian government to local CPOB medicinal production standards.

Yoshioka remains committed to supplying Indonesia with essential pharmaceuticals while at the same time looking to build on the company's expertise and export products further afield.
"I consider the potential market in Indonesia for the pharmaceutical industry to be huge due to the country's large population," adds Yoshioka. "We are doing well so far. Now, I believe we have to develop the export business and establish the Meiji Indonesia name worldwide. Our intention is to gradually expand to Latin America, the Middle East, and Europe. We want Meiji Indonesia to be seen as one of the world's leading pharmaceutical manufacturers and we are working towards that goal."
