Petrosea gives back to its adopted country

Mike Anderson, president director of Petrosea Indonesia, sees infinite possibilities for his company's business not only in the country's great oil, gas and mineral deposits but also in its population of over 200 million.

Petrosea began its 30-year history in Indonesia as a contractor building drill platforms and running supply bases for the burgeoning oil & gas industry way back in 1972. In 1990, it became the first engineering and contracting company in the country to go public when it listed on the Jakarta and Surabaya stock exchanges.

Today, Petrosea is one of Indonesia's foremost engineering and construction contractors, undertaking ventures in oil and gas, infrastructure, manufacturing, harbor works and power generation.

"We see ourselves as part of the Indonesian fabric," says Anderson. He is confident that the company's close relationship with its numerous clients will take it smoothly through the post-crisis period and beyond.

"Something which we work very hard to keep is being able to be in the business and engage with many clients," he says. "We've been involved with a lot of customers, many of whom are repeat. You'll see the same names again and again."

"We're an ideal platform to team up with because we have both local and external capacity and experience and we've demonstrated our ability to work well in partnerships," Anderson continues. "We readily try to team up with the people who have the skills we lack. I think clients respect that and see us as an excellent platform to do business with in Indonesia: a company with which it makes it easy for them to say: 'Let's work together'."

Clearly, Petrosea has found a home after its three decades of business in the Indonesia. At present, the company continues to integrate local strength and expertise in its operations, with plans to work more closely with Indonesian sub-contractors, increase the local role in the company and eventually appoint an Indonesian president director.

"One thing this company can do much more of is to engage the Indonesian talent that's here," he concludes. "The resources are here and the possibilities are here from the people, but we have to develop that. That's something I think we can give back to Indonesia in the next decade."
