Looking out over Indonesia's capital, one clear observation can be made: Jakarta's skyline is changing fast. Leading developers are creating large commercial centers where multinationals and smaller traders can carry out their business beside each other. Within the Indonesian property sector, Duta Pertiwi leads the way through its embodiment of a traditional Indonesian saying.
"The middle class market is still very strong," continues Widjaja. "We are targeting wholesalers of garments, electric appliances, consumer goods, etc. Business is good." Indeed, with small holders accounting for 80 percent of Duta Pertiwi's building space, there is a strong indication that the kiosk concept has become the preferred choice compared with street side shopping. "There is definitely a mall mentality in Jakarta," agrees Widjaja. "The alternative is shopping on the street where there is no security, and it is hot and uncomfortable." As the sector becomes more competitive, so is Duta Pertiwi. Continuing the search for new areas of land to develop and meeting Indonesian customer demands, Widjaja is confident that the company will remain a leader in the real estate development industry. "I consider us to be conservative and aggressive at the same time," he explains. "We have a responsibility to be profitable and successful while retaining our first class reputation and remaining focused. In Indonesian, we say 'Sama sama untung,' which means both of us, customer and Duta Pertiwi, can benefit from working together. Consumer trust is everything and we are creating, asking questions and keeping focused on our market."
