Growth is the only form of survival

In today's extremely competitive semiconductor market, growth equals survival. Climbing the rungs of market position is a necessity, no longer an option.

"In the early 1980s, high-tech industry virtually did not exist in Korea," says Chung Do-Ho, president of LG Siltron. "However the LG Group had a long history in chemical and electronics manufacture, and saw the potential of this business sector. Investments were made and we created one of the first silicon companies in Korea, later to become LG Siltron."

Currently ranked seventh in terms of global market share, LG Siltron has a full line of silicon wafers designed to meet the demands of virtually all market sectors. "Since companies in the chip market must either keep growing or die, growth is the only form of survival," explains Chung. "We are resolute in our goal of becoming the world's third largest wafer manufacturer within five years. It is essential that we make this happen."

LG Siltron sees Japan as a valuable future market and is already working with many Japanese companies with a level of technological sophistication unseen in most parts of the world. To further this cooperation and service its clients throughout the globe, the company has also invested heavily in web-based sales and customer relations. Using these new resources, competitiveness can be bolstered through savings in resources, allowing efficient and profitable management of the company.

With this technology, the company aims to secure a broader client base in a variety of industries. While the majority of all silicon currently produced goes towards DRAM production, new technologies being developed by the company are opening new doors all the time. LG's impact on wafer design and wafer production equipment is already recognized around the world - confirming its position as a leading innovator in the field.

Last year's recession in the global chip market has made competition for survival in this sector the toughest among all industries. The company's drive for growth is its guarantee of market dominance. "LG Siltron was born in a technological wasteland 20 years ago, and has now become an ambitious and promising global player in the industry," Chung concludes. "If someone were to ask me today: 'Is LG Siltron going to survive?' I would like to answer yes!"
