Milk provides vital ingredient in medicine

The Dutch are especially proud of their long history of dairy farming, whose products like milk, cheese and butter are well-regarded and exported around the world. And while milk has always been part of every healthy diet, one Dutch company is taking further advantage of its nutritious properties by increasing its applications beyond the daily breakfast glass.

Now on its 75th year, DMV International makes up the industrial ingredients division of leading dairy company Campina and markets a broad range of functional and nutritional ingredients.

"It is pure evolution," explains Cees de Jong, DMV's president. "Nature has included active biological compounds in cow's milk to ensure newborn calves have an optimal chance for survival. What we do is break down the milk into its various components - proteins, fats, minerals and lactose - using a variety of innovative separation techniques."

DMV boasts of a wealth of experience in supplying specific ingredients for use in the nutritional and pharmaceutical industries.

"The world's population is getting older and people are trying to improve their health by modifying their dietary intake or taking supplements," de Jong states. DMV is meeting this rapidly growing demand by processing natural proteins found in milk. The proteins are used in a wide range of products including sports drinks, dairy desserts, nutritional formulas and food for babies with specific allergies.

Further applications of these natural ingredients have been extended to the pharmaceutical industry. Pharmaceutical lactose, marketed under the brand name Pharmatose, is used as a binder in tablets, capsules and powders in today's medicines.

"We are the world leader in pharmaceutical lactose," says de Jong. "The Asian market is of great important to us. In Japan, we have close to a 60 percent market share and we supply lactose to the vast majority of the Japanese pharmaceutical industry companies."

Extensive research and development continue to mark DMV International's prime focus both in the nutritional and pharmaceutical industries. "We are research intensive and determined to carry on doing things right the first time. By remaining on the path we have chosen, we intend to lead DMV into a profitable future and play a major role in further enhancing the well-being of people world wide."
