Few businesses today are untouched by the need to protect their networks. With more employees, members or customers electronically logging onto systems, the need to ensure secure access is more important than ever. Establishing a trusted digital infrastructure is essential to enabling modern enterprises to manage their networks and resources efficiently.
NEC Benelux is a typical example of a successful Dutch-based company dedicated to providing security solutions. Meanwhile, the subsidiary of NEC Japan has grown to absorb various divisions including network maintenance, radio broadcasting, and distribution for spare parts of postal machines. But, it is securities division that has seen the most growth. "After the terrorist attacks on the US last year, some our divisions suffered a drop in business," relates company administration manager Werner de Deijn. "But in network security, demand increased. We understand building a powerful security infrastructure is essential in today's economic climate. The establishment of security management systems that incorporate advanced technologies is required to deal with constantly changing threats." On the company's extensive track record in the area of security, Ruud ten Hoorn, NEC Benelux's sales manager for touch pass solutions division (which deals with advanced security technology), spoke of a goal to conquer specific industries. "Our technology can be tailored for vertical market applications that have identification requirements. Some of these applications would be in prisons, healthcare organizations, social service programs and general security," ten Hoorn said. The technology can also be used in banks for card verification, secure commerce and communications. "We have software and hardware matching solutions, which meet the needs of both large and small organizations. The basic system includes a live scan device that contains modules for finger print image capture, quality check and feature extraction. What this means in layman's terms is we can accurately detect the identity of any person," he added. Aside from an innovative approach, NEC Benelux's success hinges on the high level of education of its employees and its logistical advantages, with Schipol airport and the Port of Rotterdam at its doorstep. "We believe we are not just offering security solutions," said de Deijn. "We want to deliver from beginning to end. We ask them what they need in terms of their office, infrastructure, and security. You name it. Then, we deliver customized applications." "We are very pleased to have been chosen as the European office to launch NEC's security's division. This tells us our Japanese headquarters believe we are the best subsidiary to communicate our state-of-the-art technology with local customers. They understand the Benelux region provides a good opportunity to capture the market. If NEC has success here, we can launch all over Europe." he added.
