The logic of diversification

NYK Logistics first established operations in Canada in 1985, even before NYK Logistics America was founded. Its original function was to handle the warehousing and distribution for Pioneer Electronics of Canada. Since 2002, the company has moved to a bigger facility and taken over logistics operations for other major electronics and automotive companies.

NYK Logistics’ business is currently focused on electronics and automotive products, but it is also looking to diversify its clientele within the chemical, food and consumer product industries.

“When we moved to our new operations, most of our staff remained with the company,” says Yoshikazu Ito, president of NYK Logistics Canada. “We have more than 15 years of experience working with Pioneer and handling electronics goods. This is one of the strengths of our company today and it gives us a key competitive advantage in the market.

“Today we work with electronics companies such as Pioneer, LG and APEX, as well as automotive companies such as Subaru and Yamaha Motors. Our business doubled in 2003 and we are certain that our customers will grow over the next few years,” Ito adds.

NYK is the only Japanese third-party logistics company in Canada that delivers goods to the market. To compete, it remains focused on the quality of its operations.

“There is great potential for our business here,” says Ito. ”In order to best understand how we can support the business of our customers, we need to work closely with them to understand their supply chain and determine how we can ensure the best service. I also want us to expand and become a total outsourcing business-solutions provider. I want to change our approach in the industry to be more customer-oriented with even closer partnerships. The ultimate goal is to grow our business together with our customers.”
