Niedersachsen or Lower Saxony is known as Germany's greenest state, and its capital Hanover has achieved the position of its greenest city. Forests surrounding the city offer the tourist and Hannoverian alike a chance to breathe in the fresh air as they stroll through one of many trails that wind their way around the capital. Walk, bike, skate or even ride horseback through these green spots around the city. Every so often you will find a lake, meadow or even a monument within the forest itself. Hanover is known as the Event City not only in business, but also cultural circles as well. The opera house on Georgstrasse, in the center of the city, is a place to enjoy world-renowned plays, operas, and musicals in the classically designed hall. The Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen, commissioned by Duke John Frederick of the Royal House of Guelph in 1666, are among the finest baroque gardens in the world. The cultivated, mathematically perfect layout features the tallest fountain in Europe. World-class concerts are regularly held here, but get your tickets early -- the spectacle of live classical music being performed in these fine settings is not to be missed. In another part of the state, Machsee Lake in Hanover and the North Sea coast epitomize the new tourist theme of the region: water and leisure. Fun-seekers can windsurf, sail, swim, or just lie on the beach at spots throughout the region. Canoe trips can also be taken along tranquil rivers running through regions like Cell, Neustadt, or Hildesheim; just minutes from Hanover. The greenery of the Hannover region also spans to greens of the golfing variety. Lower Saxony sports 12 golf courses within the Hannover region alone for every handicap. The Tourismus Hannover Region offers complete golf packages.
