Chemicals with a green heart

Established only seven years ago to supply the raw material -- Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) -- used in the manufacture of polyester fibres, garments and plastic PET bottles, Siam Mitsui PTA has already become the third largest chemical company in the country.

With the company’s raw materials now accounting for 20 percent of Thailand’s total chemical exports, Siam Mitsui PTA is looking to further increase overseas sales while continuing to meet the demands of the domestic market and putting environmental concerns at the forefront of its production process.

“Cementhai Chemicals contributes to local management and human resources, while Mitsui Chemicals provides the state-of-the-art technology and marketing skills,” explains Hayato Yonemori, chief representative of parent company Mitsui Chemicals, and managing director of Siam Mitsui PTA.

Justifiably proud of the fact that the Siam Mitsui’s PTA production process is recognized throughout Asia as cutting edge technology, Yonemori is also committed to meeting Thai environmental standards. In fact the company plays an important role in this effort.

“We work closely with the Thai government on environmental issues,” says Yonemori, who is also chairman of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce in Thailand’s Environmental Committee. “The challenge we face is to find a systematic method of industrial waste treatment. Thailand needs to improve in this area, and this is the message we have given to the Thai government.”

“Siam Mitsui PTA’s total capacity is approximately 800,000 tons per year. In fact we are already larger than the Japanese facility,” Yonemori comments. “We contribute significantly to the business activities of Mitsui Chemicals. But in order to remain Thailand’s main supplier of PTA, we intend to expand the overall business activities of Mitsui Chemicals. This will ensure further growth for the company.”
