New kid on the block aims high

NOK Precision Components Thailand (NOKPCT) is a new kid on the block – both within the NOK Group and in Thailand. It is a fresh, promising venture for NOK Corporation of Japan -- the world’s leader in sealing technology and the manufacture of automotive rubber components. The Thai subsidiary is responsible for the production of precision hard disk drive parts and electronic components such as sealing products, specialized plastics, vibration damping and noise insulation.

At the helm of NOKPCT’s 200-strong workforce is Hidenori Goto, the company’s managing director. Goto recalls: “We decided to transfer all production from Japan to Southeast Asia because we had to consider the competition from China. Competitive labor costs were an influential factor in choosing Thailand. I went back and forth to Thailand to study the viability of setting up a manufacturing base here, and concluded that Thailand was ideal for what we had planned. So I strongly recommended it to headquarters.”

“We aim to contribute a great deal to the NOK brand. Our products are highly specialized and hard disc drives need a very clean environment. Our facility has one of the best systems for contamination control, which is key to making excellent products in this field,” Goto proudly states.

The NOKPCT motto is to “Create and control the quality of products and services with continual improvement to serve our customers.” In fact, its customer list includes some of the world’s leaders is high-tech products: Fujitsu-Siemens, Hitachi, IBM, Toshiba, Texas Instruments and Seagate.

“We produce more suitable products, and we have the NOK name behind us,” Goto continues. “We have a great deal of land available to us here and we intend to expand our facility as we continue to grow. In the next 3 years I’d like expand our market share, get new customers and lay the foundations for future growth.”

Goto believes trust and respect are vital in this business. Indeed, his company has earned the much deserved recognition and respect of key Thai government agencies such as the Board of Investment (BOI). In a recent speech, the BOI secretary general, Somphong Wanapha, expressed his delight at the increased investment of NOK in Thailand, saying: “the NOK project will certainly enhance the reputation of Thai-manufactured electronics parts and components.”

The company’s contributions to the ever-growing Thai manufacturing industry are not going unnoticed.
